JEE Advanced is one of the most sought after examinations by millions of students all over the country. To ensure smart preparation for the exam, a student must solve past year papers and know about concepts that are most frequently asked. Additionally, analysis of JEE Advanced examination trends; helps students to understand the examination pattern better.

Apart from the determining the individual share of Class 11 and 12 chapters in JEE Advanced, analysing trends over the past 5 years (2013-17) also helps identify chapters and concepts with a potential to score high.

Section-wise Analysis

Historically, most of the questions in the Mathematics section were from class 12. The highest percentage of easy and difficult questions based on class 12 syllabus are asked from this section.

The following table lists the most frequently asked chapters, the ones from which usually easy questions are asked and also, those that are high scoring:

PHYSICS
Most Frequently Asked Easy Questions asked from Highest Scoring
Optics Magnetics Ohm's Law, Resistance and Properties
Heat and Thermodynamics Modern Physics Drift Velocity, Electric current in conductors
Electrostatics Work, Power and Energy
General Physics Energy in SHM
Modern Physics Optics Study of motion of conductors
  • Questions from Optics and Modern Physics are most frequently asked in the Physics section. Also, most of the easy questions are asked from these topics.
  • Other topics that are frequently asked such as Electrostatics and General Physics can be considered for scoring high apart from the ones mentioned in the table.
  • More than 40% of questions in Physics have been asked from Grade 11 syllabus on an average over this period of 5 years.
CHEMISTRY
Most Frequently Asked Easy Questions asked from Highest Scoring
Study of Functional Groups Study of Functional Groups Miscellaneous Reactions of Alkynes
Coordination Compounds Ores and Metallurgy Enthalpy Changes
Thermodynamics Chemical Bonding
Chemical Kinetics Concepts of Acids and Bases
Liquid Solutions Group 15 Other Compounds of Halogen Family
  • Questions from Study of Functional Groups are frequently asked in the Chemistry section. Also, most of the easy questions are asked from this topic.
  • Some of the topics having a good scope to score high are Ores and Metallurgy, Chemical Bonding and Group 15 apart from the ones mentioned above. They are also the topics from which easy questions have been asked in the previous year papers.
  • Over these 5 years, Chemistry section has had an increasing trend in the percentage of questions asked from Grade 11 syllabus, with consistent decrease in the percentage of questions asked from Grade 12 syllabus.
MATHEMATICS
Most Frequently Asked Easy Questions asked from Highest Scoring
Parabola Differential Equations Arithmetic Geometric Progression
Probability Probability Newton Leibnitz Rule
Vector Definite Integration
Definite Integration Planes passing through the intersection of two planes
Application of Derivatives Permutations and Combinations Problems Based on Independent Events
  • Probability and Definite Integration are the topics that are most frequently asked in the Mathematics section. Interestingly, most of the easy questions are asked from these two topics.
  • Frequently asked topics such as Parabola, Probability and Vector are others having scope to score high apart from the ones mentioned above.
  • Mathematics is the only section where an average of more than 60% of questions are asked from Grade 12 syllabus.
